Volvo
The name of Swedish car manufacturer Volvo has long been synonymous with automotive safety. Today, the brand is coupling that well earned reputation with style and performance.
Latin for “I roll,” Volvo started manufacturing vehicles in Gothenburg in 1927. The company began exporting cars to the United States in the 1950s and was the first automotive manufacturer to equip vehicles with a three point seat belt. Volvo bolstered its safety reputation by adding padded dashboards and crumple zones. It gained notoriety as the car Roger Moore drove in the 1960s television series “The Saint.” Volvo continued to develop safety features such as child proof locks, rear facing child seats and collapsible steering columns. The company showed its technical innovation prowess with turbocharged and front-wheel-drive models in the 1980s. It was also during this decade that Volvo became a “Yuppie” favorite. Today, Volvo has shed its boxy look for more aesthetically pleasing, Italian influenced designs that complement the company’s attention to safety, such as the S60R that was featured in the movie “Twilight.”
Volvo was acquired by Ford in 1998 and then sold when the Swedish automaker had financial troubles in 2008. Chinese automaker Greely is the new owner who will guide Volvo and its lineup of coupes, sedans and SUVs.
