Saab
Saab is a Swedish company that started producing automobiles in 1949. Its early aerodynamic designs reflected its beginnings as the Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget or Svenska Aircraft Company.
Saab’s dedication to design and innovation continued throughout the company’s existance. The Model 92, the Saab’s first production car, had a smaller drag coefficient than many of today’s modern cars. Saab offered extraordinary utility like equipping cars with a hatch back and fold down rear seat. In the 1970s, Saab was first in harnessing turbo technology and they also supplied the first production car with cabin air filters. The 1990s saw Saab gain a strong popularity with “yuppies” and also the introduction of the very first 16-valve turbo-charged engine, three-point seatbelts for rear seat passengers and then rear side-impact protection. Saab has since innovated active head restraints to stop whiplash and produced ventilated seats. A Saab 900 Turbo is the vehicle driven by James Bond of the 1980s.
In 1990, GM purchased half the company and in 2000 bought the other half. This relationship ceased when GM went bankrupt in 2008 and the brand was sold to the Dutch automaker, Spyker Cars. Today, Saab is pushing sedans, convertibles, hatchbacks and SUVs.
