Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz, one of the world’s most well-known brands, traces its lineage back to 1886. It was in this year that the Benz Patent Motorwagen, the first car powered by a gasoline internal combustion engine, was created by Karl Benz. Later that year, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach converted a horse drawn coach by adding an engine. The first automobile to bear the Mercedes name was marketed in 1901 by Daimler Motors. With the merger of the Benz and Daimler companies in 1926, all future vehicles would be marketed under the Mercedes-Benz brand. Mercedes-Benz provides a full line of passenger and commercial vehicles.
The iconic three pointed star hood ornament made its debut in 1910. It was modified to include a circle in 1916. Finally in 1937, the company registered the now familiar design as a three dimensional, three pointed star contained within a circle.
Mercedes has always been on the cutting edge of automotive technology. The first to put brakes on all four wheels, the company also developed traction control and passenger crumple zones. This innovation continues today with “Pre-Safe”, a collision detection system that prepares passengers and the vehicle to better absorb the impact.
Mercedes-Benz, the oldest automotive brand still in existence, produces vehicles in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas.
