Land Rover is an English manufacturer of luxury SUVs. Although well-appointed with leather seats and other interior comforts, the brand is renowned worldwide as being a highly capable off-road vehicle.

This reputation was earned from the company’s start in 1948 when Spencer and Maurice Wilkes developed a vehicle to match the U.S. Army’s World War II Jeep which they found very impressive. Over the next decades, Land Rover has increased the power, performance and refinement of its SUVs. The 1970s saw the advent of the Range Rover, an SUV geared more towards consumers than adventurers. The Range Rover was first sold in the United States in 1987. It was followed in 1989 by the two-door Discovery model. The burgeoning market for SUVs prompted then parent company BMW to make the vehicle even more luxurious to appeal to the high-end market segment. The Freelander, a sport utility model, was introduced in the late 1990s and was the first production vehicle to have Hill Descent Control. This system automatically regulates the SUVs speed during steep descents. Land Rover has recently introduced more affordable models such as the Evoque and LR4.

BMW sold the company to Ford which sold it to Tata Motors when it encountered with financial difficulties. Currently, SUV models are the only vehicles sold by the company in the United States.
