Daimler
One of the World’s First Auto Makers
In 1886 Gottlieb Daimler introduced the world to his motor carriage, a vehicle widely regarded as the first, four-wheeled automobile. Since these humble beginnings in Gottlieb Daimler’s experimental garage, Daimler Motors (a German company) has grown over the past 125 years into a global leader in the automotive industry. The automaker is the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, Smart, and the luxury brand Maybach. They also produce a line of fleet vehicles, such as vans and heavy duty trucks.
The spirit of innovation that drove Daimler in the 19th century is still alive. From technological firsts such as air bags, anti-lock brakes and passenger crumple zones to today’s advanced fuel cells and electric cars; Daimler has always been and will continue to be on the cutting edge of automotive engineering. These technological and design innovations have resulted in many older model Mercedes being highly sought after by collectors.
Daimler is a dominant competitor in the international automotive market. The company has a joint venture with Russian truck maker Kamaz, production facilities in the United States, Mexico and Japan and plans to build a new facility in Hungary. These operations are designed to support the company’s line of cars, SUVs, vans and trucks including the distinctive and environmentally friendly Smart car. Daimler Motors continues to exemplify the motto of its founder: “The Best or Nothing”.
