Cadillac
Cadillac is one of the rarest breeds of American automobile brands in that it started out as a luxury marque back in August of 1902 and has remained steadfastly focused on the pursuit of luxurious perfection with an American twist ever since. On the surface that claim may not sound like much, but many competitors both foreign and abroad ceased operations or changed their focus heavily during the Great Depression, World War I, World War II, during the fuel crisis of the 1970s, or in the economic recessions since. The hallmark of remaining on top for so long has been simple: innovation.
Innovation at Cadillac is what initially caught the eye of General Motors and the 1909 purchase was virtually inevitable as it married a financial powerhouse with the innovation necessary to create a top-breed luxury auto marque on American shores. This can still be seen today in vehicles such as the CTS-V, the world’s most powerful sports luxury coupe, or the technology packed STS that will soon give way to the next generation Cadillac that will combine the luxury and supple ride of the DTS with the power and technology of the aforementioned STS: the XTS.
While the brand represents luxury and innovation, it is certainly no stranger to experimentation in fields that other major luxury marques eschew. For example, the smash-hit Escalade (ETS in modern Cadillac lingo) was based on a very rugged purpose-built truck/SUV platform. Cadillac’s engineers managed to make even that rugged frame ride smoothly while still retaining a distinctive “Art & Science” design language that the company is now famous for. Other experiments went over less well, such as the company’s first entry into the small luxury car market: Cimarron. Fortunately, persistence is a value highly prized by innovators and experimenters and while the Cimarron was a flop, it taught the engineers in Detroit enough lessons that the next-generation small luxury car, dubbed the ATS, is already a major item in the automotive press. Similarly, even successful vehicles like the Escalade are built upon and refined generation after generation in order to keep American luxury the focus of Cadillac and the envy of the world.
